What Lil Kim, Trina, Da Brat, Foxy Brown, Jacki O, MC Lyte, Sylk E Fyne, and Queen Latifah gave me will never be given to the young rap lovin’ ladies of today by current artists.
There was a time in the not so distant past when female rappers went just as hard as any male rapper could and did not apologize for it. They were not pop stars; they were talented, bad ass, hardcore MCs. They got nasty, they were authentic, they were unafraid.
Cut to today… there’s Nicki Minaj (god awful human), Kreayshawn (?!?!?!), Ke$ha (can’t even), Iggy Azalea (SHE’S FROM AUSTRALIA), Azealia Banks (killed it on ‘212’ but everything since has been disappointing and pop-centric)… none of which I actually would deem as rappers. I don’t understand, it puts in a dark place when I think about it. Will nothing ever be as good as Lil Kim ‘Hardcore’? Will no young girl get to feel super empowered by a song as sick as Trina “Baddest Bitch” playing over the radio? Someone needs to step up and go hard or else I’ll just stay in the 90s and early 00s forever, reminiscing about the good not so ol’ days.
